What is a C.N.A?

The need for dependable bedside nursing care is as prevalent as ever.

Most bedside care in hospitals, home health, and long-term care facilities is provided by a nursing aide or assistant, a valuable member of the nursing profession. The Certified Nursing Aide or Assistant (C.N.A.), plays an important role, providing basic care while ensuring the safety and comfort of her patient and serving as a vital member of the healthcare team. According to the US Department of Labor, C.N.A.s are a high demand profession that is expected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the United States over the next ten years. The skills you acquire during your training will serve you through a lifetime of caring for your own sick children, caring for elderly parents, or ministering to your local church body.

What will I study?

Subjects will include: introduction to health care and assistant nursing,

basic nursing skills, medical terminology, infection control, patient safety, patient positioning and transport, home healthcare, personal care of the patient, emergency care, basic human anatomy & physiology, measuring vital signs, and record keeping.

Students will gain theory and clinical experience in local long-term care facilities under the supervision of our experienced Christian nurse/instructor. Thirty classroom hours with 75 clinical hours is required for certification; other hours may be utilized for home, church, and community-based service.

How do I become certified? How can I be certified in my home state?

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive a certificate of completion and will be eligible to take the Indiana state written and clinical competency exams, which are required to complete the certification process. After passing the competency exams, students will receive an Indiana State C.N.A. certification, which allows them to work in nursing homes, extended care facilities, hospitals, and home health services. This certification is acceptable through reciprocity in most states and will enable students to fill a vital need within the local church and community. If you want to know about your specific state's reciprocity process, please call the Telos office.

Who can attend?

This unique Christian course is open to anyone sixteen years of age or older. Students may find it helpful to do some preliminary study at home prior to the course. Students who have a basic understanding of medical vocabulary will be better prepared for their C.N.A. training. It is also helpful to have a basic understanding of human anatomy and physiology.

If you want to become certified, you must attend the entire four-week session. First priority will be given to those individuals wishing to complete the certification process. As space permits, we will also admit individuals who simply want to acquire care giving skills for use in their own home, but cannot be away from home for a full four weeks (i.e. family care givers). Only those individuals completing the full course and passing the examinations will earn certification.

What makes this C.N.A. course different from one I could take locally?

The Telos C.N.A. course allows you to be trained by Christian professionals in the realm of direct patient care. A Biblical perspective for care giving is presented and applied in both theory and the clinical setting.

This C.N.A. course reaches beyond the usual C.N.A. training components to include pharmacology, medication prompting, and the numerous resources available for mission and/or income enhancement within your own community.

Here you will find a sensitivity to modesty, language, and ethical issues in the current health care "culture", a perspective of Biblical wholeness, and a Christian approach to end-of-life issues, as well as guided daily discussions addressing the student's new experiences, especially in regards to expressing True Love as defined in James (caring for widows and orphans), and ensuring that those in your care must first be looked at as an individual -- never a task.

Numerous synergies from institutional care to home care, whether as a mission, for profit, or respite for other Believers will be examined.

Those with individual needs will be addressed and all efforts will be made to individualize instruction to such needs, such as care of the elderly, pediatric, handicapped, depressed, Alzheimer, and others.

You will have an on-site Christian instructor for all clinical rotations.

Who will teach this class?

Robert L Norcross II, an ATI father of four daughters, will be the program director for this special course. Mr. Norcross began his nursing career with five years working as a C.N.A. He worked as an LPN for an additional two years and has been an RN since 1988. He is licensed in four states and has taught numerous C.N.A. classes in three states. Mr. Norcross' instruction has yielded an overall 90% pass rate for those completing his courses for state certification. He is also certified as an Advanced Registered Nurse Assessment Coordinator. Mr. Norcross and his wife of twenty years, Stacy, will be available to the students during their stay at the Indianapolis Training Center.
